Puhket and its Islands

Visit the amazing islands surrounded by crystal clear water

Compared to the northern part of the country, the south is mostly made up of islands and beaches. You won’t find as many temples there, making it a nice break from temple visits.

Puhket

The easiest way to get to Phuket is to fly from Bangkok. Coming from the airport, it’s best to book a taxi in advance; it’s cheaper and way more convenient. Most hotels also offer airport transfer options. Keep in mind that the airport is quite far from the main city, so a taxi is essentially necessary.

Phuket is the main city in the Southern part of Thailand, known for its party hotspot, lively vibe, and numerous surrounding islands. Phuket is surrounded by the amazing, clear blue water of the Malacca Strait. If you’re here to party, head to the west side of the island, around Patong Beach. That’s where you’ll find the nightlife, bars, and beach parties.

Chillva Market

Don’t miss the amazing Chillva Market, honestly, probably my favorite one in all of Thailand. It’s the perfect place to grab dinner with tons of food stalls, cool lighting, music, and a really lively, fun vibe. You’ll find everything from Thai street food to little bars and boutique shops. Definitely a great way to spend the evening!

Siam Niramit Show

One of the most well-known shows in the world, the Siam Niramit Show is something you definitely need to experience! It’s a stunning cultural performance with over 100 performers, traditional Thai costumes, elaborate stage sets, and even real elephants on stage. The show takes you through the history, myths, and traditions of Thailand in a truly impressive way. You can also enjoy a Thai buffet dinner before the performance. It is quite expensive but it is a one time thing.

Islands and Excursions

To explore the nearby islands, there are plenty of boat options, both fast and slow ferries, depending on your preference. Just for information, fast boats are usually more expensive. If you are seasick, you might need seasick pills because on windy/storm days, it’s moving a lot.

Tip: It’s usually cheaper to book a round-trip ticket rather than buy two one-way tickets.

Snorkeling and Island Hoping Excursions

One of the best things to do in Thailande! There are different tours that organize snorkeling trips with various stops at different islands. Each spot has something unique, crystal-clear water, colorful fish, and stunning coral reefs. Going to Thailand without snorkeling feels like an incomplete trip. The water is so clear you can see everything underneath, and the marine life is just amazing. It’s just an unforgettable experience!

You can hop between islands and even stay overnight on one. Koh Phi Phi is the most well-known, but also the most touristic. A lot of tours offer island-hopping excursions. I recommend one (here) that includes Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi, and the incredible Viking Cave. On top of that, you’ll also have some free time for snorkeling as well.

Want to spend a few days on an island? You’ve got plenty to choose from, and it really depends on your preferences. For a peaceful and quiet escape from the crowds, consider islands like Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Noi, or Koh Mak. If you prefer parties, nightlife, and a more energetic vibe? Then Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, or Koh Phangan are great picks. They’re popular, lively, and full of activities both day and night.

Koh Lanta Island

If you decide to stop in Koh Lanta island here are my recommendations and suggestions:

First, two amazing excursions that you must do if you stay in Koh Lanta

Canoe in the Mangroves

A really fun excursion where you paddle through the mangrove forests and visit areas with wild monkeys. They’re super friendly and will hop on your canoe to get food or water!

You can find this excursion here

Meet the Elephants

If you go to Thailand, meeting the elephants is definitely a must-do activity. Chiang Mai is very popular for this, but the setting there can be quite touristy. A more memorable and peaceful experience is offered on Koh Lanta Island, where you can spend time with elephants in a more natural environment, away from the crowds. It’s something truly special and worth adding to your trip.

Conclusions on visiting Thailand’s islands

How much time you spend exploring the south really depends on what you’re into, whether it’s partying, relaxing on the beaches, or just enjoying the island vibes, as there is not much to visit.

I recommend doing excursions that include island hopping from Phuket. If you had to choose which island to stay on, I would recommend Koh Lanta. It is one of the quietest and most beautiful islands where you can relax and stay for a few nights, with many excursion options as well that will keep you busy.
