Gamla Stan

At the heart of the city lies Stortorget, the historic square in Gamla Stan. It’s known for its iconic colorful buildings, charming atmosphere, and cobblestone streets. From here, you can also see the Stockholm Cathedral and the Royal Palace, all just a short walk away

The Royal Palace

Just north of Gamla Stan, in Norrström, you’ll spot a huge and beautiful building, this is The Royal Palace, the official residence of His Majesty The King of Sweden. It’s massive, with over 600 rooms, and much of the palace is actually open to the public.

The best time to visit is around midday, when you can catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. It’s quite impressive and definitely worth seeing!

Museums

Stockholm counts many museum. Here is a list of the main one

  • Vasa Museum: A maritime museum with wordship back from the 17th century! (20€)
  • Skaken: World oldest open air museum with traditional swedish homes and handmade craft and many animals (12€)

Södermalm district

A great district to explore is Södermalm, you’ll find lots of cool cafés, vintage shops, and plenty of street art. For one of the best views of the city, head to Monteliusvägen, a great walking path overlooking the city.

Don’t miss the SoFo neighborhood in the southern part of Södermalm. It’s a lively, creative area, perfect for grabbing a coffee and exploring cool independent shops. You can easily get there by bike, hopping from island to island, or take a bus or boat.

If you’re visiting in summer, try to go on the last Thursday of the month for SoFo Nights, shops stay open until 9 pm with lots of discounts, plus street concerts and lively bars to check out. It’s a great way to soak up the local vibe!

Boat tour

You should definitely take a boat tour in Stockholm! With all its islands and waterways, the city is perfect to explore from the water. There are lots of tours available that take you through small canals and around the archipelago, giving you a unique perspective on the city’s beauty.

Nacka Strand

Then head to Nacka Strand, just outside the city center. You can get there easily by boat or bus. It’s a great spot to grab some food or a drink right by the water, with an amazing view of the “God Our Father on the Rainbow” statue, especially at sunset. Originally designed to celebrate the founding of the United Nations, the statue is a powerful symbol of peace and hope.
